Reality TV Popularity and the American Dream |

The list of reality TV shows on digital cable is longer than anyone would like to admit. I even have a station named appropriately “Reality TV.” But why? What happened to the day of the sitcom? I have to admit that I watch many of the worthless reality shows out there like Brett Michaels’ search for the perfect slut on MTV. Reality TV popularity not only is taking away from the potential of classic sitcoms like what we saw with Seinfeld but also dumbing our country down into materialistic, loose morale idiots. Not to say that quality reality shows aren’t out there like Anothny Bourdain’s No Reservations, Future Weapons, and the many other shows on History, Discovery, Science, Food and the other fact based stations. But is this mindless television exactly what this country stands for? I think so.
Nothing promotes capitalism and the quest for wealth more then being inundated by so called normal people on reality TV that have exotic cars, eat chef cooked food and have beautiful homes. Not to mention the beautiful people that go with that kind of lifestyle and who doesn’t like to party, I know I do. So in that respect reality TV popularity is creating a generation of greedy people who love to party hard and I for one will jump right on board that train. I don’t see reality TV declining anytime soon. The facts about reality television is that whether or not people believe it is real they become accustomed to the nicer things in life. |
