One of my niece's got stranged in a hurricane in Cancun a few years ago and she said that had they had enough battery power or electricity, they could have made their own episodes of reality TV shows for Survivor. She said it was really a multidimensional experience, mixing the good with the bad. She was there with her two kids and husband, and the sheltered in a school classroom. Once they got back and got healthy, she gave me a list of reality TV shows that she now felt she and her family would qualify for based on their experience getting through nearly five days without any amenities, whatsoever. Reality TV popularity is dependant on people's need for shock value. There is something in the human psyche that likes to be challenged and frightened, which accounts for the reality TV popularity. Viewing other people's challenges from the safety of home is much easier than going through them in real life, as my niece can testify. They have since been back to Cancun, but only during the winter. |
