Although most articles online will report that reality TV popularity comes from inner desires to gain personal status in society or to watch someone else take a fall on live television, in the hopes that it will ease our own personal discrepancies and make us not look so bad, these are not the reasons why reality TV popularity has increased in our home. While going through a list of reality TV shows, I was considering which ones have increased the reality TV popularity amongst my children and myself. The one that comes to the top of our list? Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. This show has nothing in it about someone trying to compete for social status or anyone falling from integrity because their home life has been publicized to a breaking point. No, this reality TV show is all about helping families in need. There is no selfish gain. There is no vying for the top spot. There is no display of inappropriate behavior and moral disgrace. The reality TV popularity of this particular show is because we can relate to someone else's tragedy and need for assistance. My kids and I love to watch this show because of the heart and sympathy for others behind it. I am so thankful that not every reality TV show has to be about being the best at something or selfish gain. I'm thankful that my kids and I can sit down and enjoy a reality show that teaches us to look out for others and to be willing to give when it is needed.
